Sometimes I've got a pretty good idea of where I'm going by the time I go into the studio to work on a piece. This time, the process was one of discovery. The underlying structures are based on a 33/16 (or eleven in a three beat pulse subdivision) and some of the material is developed around metric concepts described on page 68 of the book "Pure Rhythm" by Adam Rudolph. (link below). I started out just mapping out the metric material so that I could begin to hear the relationships in the layers of time. Once I had mapped out the structures I was able to start thinking about roles, energy, momentum, and shape.

Writing polymetric material that grooves poses an interesting challenge. I've found that when cycles cross there are usually some places where the "phasing" between the layers gets awkward or clunky. The gravity suggested by each layer often ends up in conflict somewhere in the larger cycle. So I like to evaluate each moment in each layer to sculpt how it affects the other layers and the whole. This is part of why developing polymetric material is a process of discovery. The math provides parameters, strict boundaries within which to work. For me, the art is in finding and exposing the relationships between the layers.

I'm using a large ensemble arrangement here so that the listener can identify the reinforced patterns more easily. With single instruments each playing discrete parts it can be difficult to know whether note placement is deliberate. By doubling up on parts, the listener can more easily identify the patterns and how they relate to one another.

Thanks to Adam Rudolph for the the inspiration to explore this material. I'm reminded what a process of discovery working with polymetric music can be. This was that from conception through to completion and I still have plenty of room to grow with it.
