about

(July 2020)

A couple of months ago, I was experimenting with collaborating online with a friend. We played for about an hour. I hope someday to share the fruits of that effort in some form. Meanwhile, here's a Saturday afternoon exploration of a musical idea that arose during that session. The featured instruments are an 18" Cooperman frame drum and an LP Udongo udu drum.

I also want to share something about the roots of this piece and ALL of the music I create. I grew up on a diverse musical diet. As a kid my musical education was first informed by movie soundtracks from John Williams, progressive rock albums by Rush, fusion from Return to Forever and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, funk from Parliament Funkadelic, Cameo, and the Gap band, complex and ornate grooves from Earth Wind & Fire, deep expressions from Stevie Wonder, and lots of other amazing music - almost all of it deeply rhythmic.

As a musician, I've been inspired by the rhythm traditions of Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, South Africa, Cuba, Brazil, Peru, Egypt, Morocco, Persia, India, Spain, Bulgaria, Croatia, Albania, Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Turkey, and many others.I've been lucky enough to get to play with musicians from all over the world. Many of those experiences were among the most rewarding of my life. Music is a universal language with thousands of cultural dialects.

My work has always been playing in the intersections of rhythm traditions and structures. For those of you who have been inspired by my music, know that I owe all of my inspiration to the thousands of amazing musicians who have come before me from around the globe. The vast majority of them have been people of color, creativity, brilliance, discipline, and courage. They have been my teachers and my inspiration my whole life.

So if you're ever inspired by any of my work, I would like to encourage you to check out my influences (reach out to me, if you would like specific links). For those of us that like to play in the intersections, music reminds us that we are one family, one people, and we all have things to learn from one another.
